Parents can call experts at the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children
An alarming increase in the number of incidents of adults enticing children online for sexual acts spurred immediate response from the Qwest Foundation to fund a resource that offers immediate help—and it’s as easy as picking up the telephone and dialing 1-888-NETS411. The scary news is: The National Center for Missing & Exploited Children announced that there were four times as many reports of online sexual enticement of children to the CyberTipline. That number rose from 2,660 in 2005 to 11,386 in 2007.

Although many groups are trying to raise online safety awareness through seminars and community forums, NCMEC decided it was time to grant the public access to CyberTipline experts in an effort to PREVENT online crime as well as accept reports after it has occurred.

The NetSmartz411 experts are highly trained, skilled professionals with an exceptionally high level of Internet knowledge. They are full-time employees of the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children and are trained in all areas of the Internet and emerging technologies used by child predators. This includes social networking websites newsgroups, chat rooms, E-mail instant messaging, online video games and peer-to-peer technologies. These are the individuals who work closely with law enforcement officers and industry leaders such as Qwest to stay one step ahead of these child predators.

The project is an expansion of NetSmartz411.org—an online help desk that was established in Feb 2007. Conversation promotes clarity, and often parents aren’t sure of the questions they need to ask, although they may sense potential danger. Now all they have to do is ask.

Parents can call NetSmartz411′s tipline — 1-888-NETS411- Monday through Friday from 11 a.m. — 8 p.m. ET.

Members of the U.S. Congress will present four, Spirit of Online Safety Awards to educators and police officers recognizing their outstanding efforts to PREVENT cybercrime. The award presentation will take place at noon, Thursday, April 3, in Washington D.C.

While protecting children is a must, the current system in place allows for major abuse of power as each child removed from the home means a money rewards for the CPS office to the tune of thousands of dollars per kid. Every once and awhile a child who needs to be saved from harm actually is helped, but more often than not, children who are not abused or neglected get targeted and taken to meet state quotas for the federal funds. Mainstream media looks the other way because these agencies would accuse them of not supporting child welfare, while corrupt CPS caseworkers (not the good ones, the bad ones, as there are good workers out there) but the corrupt ones tear good, loving families apart and get away with it. Kudos to the local station who put this out for public broadcast!

I’m writing an article and I find myself at a loss for information (just so you’re aware, I’m writing the article to advocate parental supervision as the best method. So, don’t suggest it if you want best answer for this one).

I use GabMail to be sure that the person wanting to talk to my daughter online is who they say they are. If they are a known contact or one who appears to be a safe person, then I add them to her addressbook; if they aren’t a good contact, they get added to our internet browser’s block list. In case you’ve never heard of Gabmail, visit www.freegabmail.com to see how it works. It is Free, doesn’t require special software, and doesn’t suck up your time in filling out registration information. You just record your video message and send the link to whomever (either via email, webpage, blog, etc.).
Yes, parent supervision is the primary neccesity in protecting children. Gabmail helps take the guesswork out of identity though. And, since I’d have their video link in my email, if that person were to step out of line, I’d have a video ID to hand over to the authorities. So, in my case, I use video emails to protect my child from internet predators. She’s never allowed to surf alone, and can only email people I have added to her addressbook. And the only way they get there is if I have viewed them through a GabMail.

I see a lot of young girls and boys on here "shopping" for friends and signifigant others. They will say things like "I'm 15 and a girl, i really need a boyfriend in the San Diego area." or "I'm 16 and lonely, and need someone to talk to" If parents are not going to educate their children on Internet safety should the schools play a larger role.
I saw a question earlier today about whether or not teen girls get pubic hairs and what they are like…it was too graphic for just being curious and too ignorant to be taken seriously. Some young girls actually answered the question. I was shocked at how naive these girls are. Do they not realize that even when someone says he or she is under 18 that it could really be a pedophile in disguise?
Is there anything we can do about this? It's becoming more and more common for young children to be taken in by Internet preditors, it's frightening.

I agree with you, although i do not have children of my own my neices and nephews are always at my house. If the computer is on I am always right there helping or making sure they are not anywhere they are not allowed to be. They are NOT allowed to IM or go into chat room….they are all under 10 and I would consider that extremely inapporpriate.
I am in grad school getting my Masters in Education and was just curious if it was taught in public schools anywhere…

Schools in my area do. Parents are also required to sign a permission form to allow the kids online at school. Parents are also encouraged to monitor their children and teach them the rules. Unfortunately, parents don't always do a good job.
